CAIRO, June 23 (MENA) - Arab League (AL) Secretary-General Ahmed Abul Gheit strongly condemned Monday the unprecedented bombing that targeted Mar Elias Church in Damascus expressing condolences to the families of the victims and the injured as well as sympathy with the Syrian government and people.
The AL Secretary-General’s Spokesperson Jamal Rushdi conveyed the pan-Arab body’s deep concern over this new development, being a deliberate targeting of civilians in a place of worship, warning of its negative repercussions on Syria’s security and stability.
The spokesman highlighted the continued threat posed by terrorist organizations, particularly Daesh, noting the increased danger resulting from ongoing chaos and lack of security. Rushdi voiced hope that the Syrian government would be able to confront these terrorist groups and others seeking to undermine civil peace in Syria and the region.
The Secretary-General affirmed the AL ’s solidarity with Syria - its government and people - and its support for efforts to achieve a peaceful transitional process that safeguards the rights of all Syrians and fulfills their aspirations for stability and development. (MENA)
