Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that there is an American vision focusing on the Gaza Strip following the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel, and that any upcoming agreement must include sufficient guarantees to ensure the sustainability of the ceasefire.
Regarding the issue of the displacement of Palestinians, the Foreign Minister stressed that “the displacement of Gaza’s residents is a red line for both Egypt and Jordan—one that cannot be tolerated or crossed.” He pointed out that Egypt is making strong efforts to hold a Gaza Reconstruction Conference in Cairo within a few weeks of the ceasefire, to implement the Arab-Islamic plan that was approved at the emergency Arab summit held in Cairo last March, as well as at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation conference. This plan has been accepted and supported by the European Union, China, Russia, and many influential countries.
Abdelatty explained that all preparatory and organizational aspects for the Gaza Reconstruction Conference have been completed in coordination with the United Nations and the President of the World Bank, including the agenda, outcomes, goals, and other organizational details. He noted that the conference will be held over two days. The first day will feature four workshops focused on issues of concern to the international community, the Palestinian side, and the Middle East region.
He added that the conference will also include four workshops concentrating on the role of the private sector in early recovery, security arrangements, governance of the sector, and who will manage it.
Abdelatty added: “What we want is to help the Palestinian people remain on their land, in the face of displacement plans, by launching quick-impact projects such as prefabricated housing units to provide shelter for Palestinian families living in the open.” He continued by saying that the next point of discussion will be the security arrangements in Gaza, noting that no one will invest in reconstruction without knowing the future security of the Strip. The conference will then address the issue of governance, as the central question remains: who will rule the Strip? (MORE)
