The Mid-Year Coordination Summit of the African Union, currently taking place in Malabo in Equatorial Guinea, opened with statements from African heads of state and government.
The summit focuses on reviewing and discussing the progress made in advancing continental integration and unity in Africa, in line with the Abuja Treaty, which laid the foundation for regional integration across the continent.
The central theme of the 2025 summit is achieving justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations. This topic reflects a growing continental commitment to addressing historical injustices and advocating for global recognition and redress.
African leaders are also reviewing a detailed report on the implementation status of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), a landmark initiative aimed at boosting intra-African trade.
Also, the summit features a presentation on the division of labor between AU member states, regional economic communities (RECs) and the African Union Commission, to ensure clarity, efficiency, and synergy in development efforts.
President Sisi is delivering two key addresses during the summit.
The summit is expected to produce concrete outcomes including accelerating the pace of continental integration, adopting a unified division of labor framework and endorsing the 2025 implementation report of the AfCFTA, which serves as a blueprint for economic collaboration across the continent.
