ALEXANDRIA, Egypt, May 20 (MENA) - Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Sherif Fathy affirmed the Egyptian state's strong commitment to preserving the Abu Mina archaeological site in the Borg El Arab area west of Alexandria.
This commitment follows directives from President Abdel Fattah El Sisi, particularly concerning the removal of groundwater that had posed a serious threat to the historical site, he said during an inspection tour of the place, accompanied by Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria and Patriarch of the See of St. Mark, Director of UNESCO’s Regional Office in Cairo Nuria Sanz, Alexandria Governor Ahmed Khaled, and Dr. Mohamed Ismail, the Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities.
Fathy emphasized that the successful groundwater removal efforts had been met with commendation from UNESCO. He described the Abu Mina site as a unique heritage landmark with both archaeological and religious significance, underscoring its exceptional historical value. He also stressed that the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities is treating the site with the highest level of care and reverence due to its importance.
He further noted that the coming period will witness intensified restoration activities at the site, in line with the ministry's broader strategy to safeguard heritage sites listed on UNESCO's List of World Heritage in Danger.
Pope Tawadros II highlighted the spiritual and national significance of the Abu Mina site, which he described as a sacred destination for both Christians and Muslims, as well as for international tourists. He referred to the site as a distinctly Egyptian heritage page that brings pride to all Egyptians and praised UNESCO’s role in preserving this vital cultural and religious landmark.
The governor of Alexandria affirmed that the governorate’s development efforts around the site complement those of the central government. He noted that work is underway to improve infrastructure, including roads and electricity networks, to support the site and enhance visitor experience. He stated that approximately 8.5 million tourists visit the area annually and expressed pride in Alexandria’s hosting of such a significant religious and historical monument.
The Abu Mina archaeological site, located near the Monastery of Saint Mina in King Mariout, is of profound historical importance as it encompasses the ancient city of the Coptic martyr Saint Mina the Miraculous. The site is recognized both for its religious relevance and its architectural and archaeological value, making it a focal point of national and international heritage conservation efforts. (MENA)
