CAIRO/MUNICH, Feb 14 (MENA) - Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Egyptian Expatriates Badr Abdelatty confirmed that achieving security and stability in the Horn of Africa is a strategic priority for Egypt, as it is a fundamental pillar for regional and continental security and serves Egypt's national interests and national security, especially in light of the growing challenges facing the region.
This came during a meeting he held Friday with European Union's Special Representative for the Horn of Africa Annette Weber on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference, where they discussed the latest regional developments and ways to enhance cooperation between Egypt and the European Union to support security and stability in the region.
Abdelatty emphasized the importance of protecting Somalia's stability and the need to respect its sovereignty and territorial integrity, confirming Egypt's support for Somali state institutions.
He highlighted Egypt’s participation in the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), underlining the importance of boosting international efforts to support the Somali government in achieving security, combating terrorism, and enhancing the state's sovereignty over its territory.
The discussions also tackled the situation in Sudan, where he stressed the need to end its conflict due to its repercussions on the Sudanese people and the stability of the entire region. He reviewed Egypt’s intensive efforts, in coordination with various international parties, to support peace efforts, attain a ceasefire, and ensure the delivery of humanitarian aid to the suffering Sudanese population.
The talks touched as well on the issue of water security, where the the top diplomat reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to defending its water rights, considering it a vital issue. He emphasized the necessity of adhering to the principles of international law in managing water resources fairly and equitably, while ensuring the rights of all parties.
For her part, the EU special representative expressed her appreciation for Egypt's active role in promoting peace and integration in the Horn of Africa, especially given the increasing challenges facing the region. She affirmed the European Union’s keenness to continue coordinating and cooperating with Egypt on all security and developmental files to confront regional threats.
